Activity 5

Activity 5

Create a landscape utilizing foreground subject matter to create a sense of depth. Discuss how the resulting image is likely to be read by the viewer.

Humberto Perez

This closed landscape I created is a shallow depth of field. The viewer would read this picture as very close up, and they can see many sharp needles. This would tell them not to touch this cactus or else they might be in pain. Also the cactus looks free full of life. While the back looks dead, saying in the harshest conditions there is still life.

Activity 4

 Activity 4

Create two photographs in a location with tall buildings or trees using both formats. Create a closed and open landscape at one location. Discuss the different ways we read the resulting images.

New York City is an enormous city, and we can see this by looking on how much space it takes. The right picture is an open landscape, it is an open landscape because we are seeing the whole, rather than one building or a couple of buildings. An example of a closed landscape is the picture on the left side. This photo focuses on a couple of buildings in New York. We see in the closed landscape that the building are very tall, if we saw an open we would not think the building are that big.

Activity 3

Activity 3

Compare and contrast a landscape photograph with a landscape painting. Discuss the expressive possibilities of each medium using your examples to illustrate your argument. Choose your examples carefully as representative of the medium.

Example: The two images below are similar in subject matter, how are they similar? How are they different? What options doe a painter have compared to the options a photographer has in terms of expression.

These two pictures are very similar, because they are both about the beach. They both have clouds, and the color of the sea is the same, along with the sand. Also with a beautiful blue sky. They are different because the painting has more clods and the sea is more blue. The expression of the painting is more life and beauty, with the picture you want to be there.

Landscape: Activity 2: Blog

Activity 2

Find two landscape photographs that question social values or act as a metaphor for personal issues that the photographer is trying to express. Discuss whether the communication is clear or ambiguous and how this communication is conveyed.

Example: What does the image below say about humans need to control the environment? Or, does it indicate an attempt to recreate a time long past and remind people of their outdoor beginnings? What do you think? Does it say anything different?

Kathryn Garcia

Humans do not need to pay attention to the environment because it has been here since the beginning of time and it been great without humans. Rather humans should be worried when thy build building and abandon them. Where mother nature could of been grown.

Marcos Cordero

We need to see that nature is something great in life. We need to get away from our jobs an enjoy what mother nature gives us. Also there was much grass and tree if it were not destructed by human beings.

Landscape: Activity 1: Blog

Activity 1

View the image by Walker Evans on this page and describe what you can actually see (objective analysis) and what you think the image is about (subjective analysis).

Discuss how effective Walker Evans has been in using a landscape image to communicate a point of view. Can this photograph be considered as Art? Give two reasons to support your answer.

Make sure you include the image in your blog post with credit in the citation. When you analyze the photo, look for deeper meaning beyond the literal description of the Photo.

Bethlehem, Graveyard and Steel Mill - Walker Evans 1935 © Walker Evans Archive, 1994,

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

In this picture, I see a graveyard and see industrial building. Beyond the building I see a city. To my opinion the image is telling me that things will change but there is going to be things that stay the same. He is making a point by using the graveyard of his point. This can be considered as art. This is because everyone has a different opinion of what is art and what is not. In his eye it is. Another reason this is considered art is because it gives symbolism and mood to the picture.

Find two examples of photographs, which make use of maximum depth of field, and two examples, which have very shallow depth of field.
Describe how the photographer’s selective use of aperture affects the subject in each of the photographs you have chosen.

oberphotographytips.com

Shallow depth of field was used here, it is use because there is a wall or in such case like this, an object. As you see, the aperture the more light and clearer you see in the image. In this one the f22 was the max, the best too. Vice verse on the f2.8.

photography-tips-guide.com

Another example of shallow depth of field is the image on the right has a good shallow depth of field but you can still see the background. Which is ok, but you want to see the object more attention. Such as the right one, it has more attention.

Activity 3

Activity 3

Find two images that have been shot into the light or included the light source. Explain how the photographer may have gone about taking a light meter reading for these photographs.

snapmotive.com

In the picture of the girl in the woods, the photo was shot into the light. The left picture was not the best, there is reflection of the sun, and really you can not see much. Leading to the picture on the right side, which is much better. The photographer use the light meter ti make it less bright in the background, and the reflection. Most of all you want to see the object, in this case the model.

Violetshotphotography.com

Another example of a photographer shooting into the light. You can see the model but yet see the sun, the model is very bright and no shadows on her face. The light meter reading is good, there is enough light, but enough to see the model.

Find an example of a photograph where the subject has been lit by a single light source and an example where more than one light has been used.
Describe in each the quality and position of the brightest or main light and the effect this has on the subject. In the second example describe the quality and effect the additional light has.
Tony Howell

This is an example of single light source because, the sun is one thing and gives out light. Using the sun is great, it gives out so much light and pretty much lights up everything. Also using the sun will give out wonderful colors.

Josh Johnson

There is multiple lighting from one source. The light is mostly hitting her face and upper body, making those parts more bright. The additional lights, are reflectors to light. In the picture there looks to be three additional light sources.

Light: Activity 1 Blog

Activity 1

Blog Entry

Look through assorted photographic websites and find some examples of subjects lit by hard light and examples of subjects lit by soft light. Describe the effect the light has on the subject’ texture, form and detail, and the overall mood of the picture.

Jim Harmer

The shadows in Jim's pictures are short and not long shadows. Example by that is the guys neck. With the woman in the picture, her dots on the shirt are a great texture by the light. The hard light causes the texture. Also the hard light is creating sooth texture on their faces, making their face smooth.

John Adkins

Although the objects are dark the model is bright and light is shinning on her. Light is only shinning on the model here, you can tell by the objects being dark. There is also no shadows on the model. When there is shadows on the object they are long shadows not short shadows. Making this have soft lighting.

John Adkins

Soft light is being applied her by not showing much shadow. The only shadow here is in the low right corner. The Model has no shadow here. Most likely for the model not to have any shadow, the photographer must of had multiple lights on taking this picture. This is because her skin is bright and looks smooth.

Jack Howard

Hard light was used in this picture because, the neck, nose, and right chin all have short shadows on them. This is not soft light because if it was there would not be any shadows on the model. You can see texture in the models chin by the hard light.

Activity 4

Activity four:

Collect one image where the photographer has placed the main subject off center and retained a sense of balance and one image where the photographer has placed the main subject off center and created a sense of imbalance. Discuss the possible intentions of the photographer in creating each image.
Create four images, placing the focal point and/or visual weight in different areas of the frame. Discuss whether each image is balanced.

Humbirdhum

The intention of this photo is that the photographer took a picture of the hills, then put a mailbox to add some volume to the picture. If the picture just had the hill, it would look dull. Instead they put some object so it wouldn't be. Concluding that this photo has a sense of balance.

Julie Waterhouse

This photo has a sense of imbalance because the only thing the viewer is looking at the tree and the fence post. When really there's actually a lot more to look at, but can't. This is due to the snow. It still has a sense of rule of thirds by the tree and fence post.

Moondigger
Picture of tree in water: This is rule of thirds because the end of the water is on the bottom horizontal line. Also the tree is on the right of the vertical line. Thus meaning this picture is rule of thirds. It also has a rule of third grid to see.
This is rule of thirds because the tree is on the horizontal line and the Statue of Liberty is on the right side of the vertical line. It also has

Activity 2
Q. What does John Szarkowski mean when he says that photographers are quoting ‘out of context’ when they make photographic pictures?

Q. The frame often ‘dissects familiar forms’. At the end of the last century photography was having a major impact on Art. Impressionist artists such as Degas were influenced by what they saw. Look at these examples of Degas work, which clearly shows the influence of Photography, and explain why the public might have been shocked to see such paintings.

Question 1
John Szarkowski was trying to explain what can you leave out or put in the picture. Also what will you make the picture mean inside the frame.

Question 2
The public was shocked to see these painting because these were not the average pictures people took. One painting to say is the one with the woman naked. The people were use to seeing people in clothes, but to see them without was shocking.

Activity 1

Look through assorted photographic websites and observe how many photographers have moved in very close to their subjects. By employing this technique the photographer is said to ‘fill the frame’ and make their photographs more dramatic. Find two examples of how photographers seek simple backgrounds to remove unwanted detail and to help keep the emphasis or ‘focal point’ on the subject. Attach two images you find to your reply to this discussion.

This image removes the other leaves in the background. The focal point in the one leaf with water on it. The photographer was trying to set a calming mood to the audience. This is mood is done by giving red and green colors and with some water drops. The photographer went up really close and blurred the background.

This photographer seemed simple background by blurring out the fabric and making the nail really sharp. Thats also how he removed unwanted details (the fabric). As you can see the focal point of this picture is the nail and the red lint. He also emphasis by only making the nail nailing red lint.
