Find two examples of photographs, which make use of maximum depth of field, and two examples, which have very shallow depth of field.
Describe how the photographer’s selective use of aperture affects the subject in each of the photographs you have chosen.

oberphotographytips.com

Shallow depth of field was used here, it is use because there is a wall or in such case like this, an object. As you see, the aperture the more light and clearer you see in the image. In this one the f22 was the max, the best too. Vice verse on the f2.8.

Another example of shallow depth of field is the image on the right has a good shallow depth of field but you can still see the background. Which is ok, but you want to see the object more attention. Such as the right one, it has more attention.

Find two images that have been shot into the light or included the light source. Explain how the photographer may have gone about taking a light meter reading for these photographs.

snapmotive.com

In the picture of the girl in the woods, the photo was shot into the light. The left picture was not the best, there is reflection of the sun, and really you can not see much. Leading to the picture on the right side, which is much better. The photographer use the light meter ti make it less bright in the background, and the reflection. Most of all you want to see the object, in this case the model.

Violetshotphotography.com

Another example of a photographer shooting into the light. You can see the model but yet see the sun, the model is very bright and no shadows on her face. The light meter reading is good, there is enough light, but enough to see the model.

Find an example of a photograph where the subject has been lit by a single light source and an example where more than one light has been used.
Describe in each the quality and position of the brightest or main light and the effect this has on the subject. In the second example describe the quality and effect the additional light has.
Tony Howell

This is an example of single light source because, the sun is one thing and gives out light. Using the sun is great, it gives out so much light and pretty much lights up everything. Also using the sun will give out wonderful colors.

Josh Johnson

There is multiple lighting from one source. The light is mostly hitting her face and upper body, making those parts more bright. The additional lights, are reflectors to light. In the picture there looks to be three additional light sources.

Light: Activity 1 Blog

Activity 1

Blog Entry

Look through assorted photographic websites and find some examples of subjects lit by hard light and examples of subjects lit by soft light. Describe the effect the light has on the subject’ texture, form and detail, and the overall mood of the picture.

Jim Harmer

The shadows in Jim's pictures are short and not long shadows. Example by that is the guys neck. With the woman in the picture, her dots on the shirt are a great texture by the light. The hard light causes the texture. Also the hard light is creating sooth texture on their faces, making their face smooth.

John Adkins

Although the objects are dark the model is bright and light is shinning on her. Light is only shinning on the model here, you can tell by the objects being dark. There is also no shadows on the model. When there is shadows on the object they are long shadows not short shadows. Making this have soft lighting.

John Adkins

Soft light is being applied her by not showing much shadow. The only shadow here is in the low right corner. The Model has no shadow here. Most likely for the model not to have any shadow, the photographer must of had multiple lights on taking this picture. This is because her skin is bright and looks smooth.

Jack Howard

Hard light was used in this picture because, the neck, nose, and right chin all have short shadows on them. This is not soft light because if it was there would not be any shadows on the model. You can see texture in the models chin by the hard light.
