Light: Activity 1 Blog

Activity 1

Blog Entry

Look through assorted photographic websites and find some examples of subjects lit by hard light and examples of subjects lit by soft light. Describe the effect the light has on the subject’ texture, form and detail, and the overall mood of the picture.

Jim Harmer

The shadows in Jim's pictures are short and not long shadows. Example by that is the guys neck. With the woman in the picture, her dots on the shirt are a great texture by the light. The hard light causes the texture. Also the hard light is creating sooth texture on their faces, making their face smooth.

John Adkins

Although the objects are dark the model is bright and light is shinning on her. Light is only shinning on the model here, you can tell by the objects being dark. There is also no shadows on the model. When there is shadows on the object they are long shadows not short shadows. Making this have soft lighting.

John Adkins

Soft light is being applied her by not showing much shadow. The only shadow here is in the low right corner. The Model has no shadow here. Most likely for the model not to have any shadow, the photographer must of had multiple lights on taking this picture. This is because her skin is bright and looks smooth.

Jack Howard

Hard light was used in this picture because, the neck, nose, and right chin all have short shadows on them. This is not soft light because if it was there would not be any shadows on the model. You can see texture in the models chin by the hard light.
